Rooted in Giving-Mt Vernon Baptist Church Food Ministry

communiity impact/outreach Deanna Parrish March 4, 2026

As a realtor here in Jasper, Alabama, I spend much of my time helping families find their forever homes, navigating neighborhoods, and celebrating new beginnings. But some of the most meaningful moments in my life happen outside of real estate—right here in our community, through service at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

Every month, our church family comes together to make a real difference for our neighbors who need a little extra support. Two programs in particular have touched my heart deeply:

1.  Delivering Groceries to Homebound Seniors
Once a month, a group of volunteers loads up vehicles with boxes of groceries, bags of produce, and meats and heads out to deliver them directly to homebound seniors across Jasper and the surrounding areas. These aren’t just boxes of food—they’re a chance to check in, share a smile or a hug, offer a prayer, and remind someone that they’re seen and valued.
I’ve had the privilege of knocking on doors and hearing stories from folks who’ve lived in Walker County their whole lives. Some share memories of old Jasper landmarks or of Smith Lake being built, and others just light up at the sight of a familiar face. In a world that can feel isolating, especially for those who can’t get out easily, these deliveries bring connection as much as nourishment.

2.  Monthly Drive-Through Food Distribution
We also host a drive-through distribution event each month, open to anyone in our community who’s facing tough times—whether due to job loss, medical bills, rising costs, or any other challenge. Families pull through, receive groceries and essentials with dignity, and leave knowing their neighbors care.
It’s inspiring to see cars lined up, volunteers waving and loading trunks, groups helping hand out bags, people praying for each other, and everyone working side-by-side. It’s a beautiful picture of what community looks like when we show up for one another.

These efforts are part of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church’s broader commitment to loving our neighbors through practical help—like our ongoing food pantry and senior grocery program. Located at 6450 Curry Hwy in Jasper, the church has been a beacon of faith and service for years, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Why do I share this as a realtor? Because the heart of Jasper isn’t just in its homes and properties—it’s in its people. When I help someone buy or sell a home, I’m not just closing a transaction; I’m investing in the same community I serve through these monthly outreaches. Strong neighborhoods are built on compassion, connection, and looking out for one another, especially our seniors, our veterans, and those going through hard seasons.

If you’re in Jasper or Walker County and could use groceries from the drive-through, or just want to connect, reach out to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church (you can find them online at mtvernononline.com or call 205-387-8251). And if you’re interested in volunteering—whether packing bags, delivering, or helping at the drive-through—there’s always a place for you. The joy of giving back is contagious!

Thank you to everyone at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, the Community Foodbank of Central Alabama, and to Dollar General and Publix, for making these ministries possible. You’re making Jasper and the surrounding areas a better place, one meal and one kind word at a time.

What about you? Have you volunteered in our community lately, or is there a cause close to your heart? I’d love to hear in the comments below.

With gratitude, a faithful heart and hometown pride,

Deanna
