Downtown Jasper's Christmas Starts on a Monday Night This Year

October 29, 2026

Downtown Jasper has three holiday events between the Monday after Thanksgiving and that Thursday: a tree lighting on Main, the Walker County Christmas Parade and the first holiday night at a museum that opened in May. All three fall on weeknights, so families will be fitting them around a school and work week. Two of the three had never been on Jasper's December calendar before last year.

That's the week to plan for. Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26. Four days later, downtown starts what amounts to a holiday festival spread over a work week.

Monday, Nov. 30: Christmas on Main, Second Year

Jasper Main Street lists its Festival of Lights & Christmas on Main as a tree-lighting event on Monday, Nov. 30, from 5 to 7 p.m. The listing doesn't yet give the tree's exact spot or a full lineup. Last year's first edition shows what the organizers built.

The Walker Leader reported that the idea came out of the Jasper Main Street Vitality Committee, which wanted more family events downtown. Organizer Jordanna Gunter told the paper the group had talked about it the year before but ran out of time to pull it together. The 2025 event was set for Dec. 1, and inclement weather pushed it to Monday, Dec. 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

According to the Walker Leader, the 2025 program included:

  • Trolley rides along Main Street, with volunteers dressed as elves singing and handing out candy canes
  • Santa and Mrs. Claus for photos, visits and cookies
  • Pony rides on ponies dressed as reindeer
  • Carolers in Dickens-style costumes, organized by Eddie Brown
  • Booths around the square: handprint ornaments with local artist Deanna Payne of Lhmercii, a Christmas photo booth and a hot cocoa bar
  • Vendors including Grit and Grace, Deb's on Fifth and Boutique Tallulah, plus food and drinks from Main Street Market, The Pink Cone and Paper Places

That was last year's list, and the 2026 program hasn't been published yet. Gunter's comments after that first run hint at where the event is headed. As she put it to the Walker Leader:

"I'm glad the schools and vendors stepped up to be part of the first year. You never know how a new event will go, but everyone was willing to participate. I'm excited to see how it grows in the future."

The bigger change for 2026 is the date. Last year's event was scheduled for the first Monday in December and ended up a week later than that. This year it's the night before the parade, so the two events now fall on back-to-back nights.

Tuesday, Dec. 1: The Parade Follows on Night Two

The Chamber of Commerce of Walker County's Walker County Christmas Parade is Tuesday, Dec. 1. Jasper Main Street lists it from 6 to 8 p.m. The Daily Mountain Eagle's seasonal calendar gives the timing:

  • 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Santa greets children at the Jasper Civic Center
  • 4 p.m.: Parade lineup begins around T.R. Simmons School
  • 6 p.m.: Parade steps off

Santa wraps up at the Civic Center half an hour before the parade starts, then joins the parade. That leaves a short window for families who want both a visit and a curbside spot.

The Chamber's permit request on the Jasper City Council's Sept. 8, 2026 agenda asks for street closures along parts of Viking Drive, 19th Street, 6th Avenue and 18th Street. The 2025 route described by the Daily Mountain Eagle used those same streets. It ran down 19th Street, paused at the Jasper Civic Center and the courthouse square, turned right onto 6th Avenue, then right onto 18th Street, and ended back at the old Walker High School parking lot. No theme for 2026 has been announced.

Anyone who drives through downtown on a weekday evening should plan around those four streets on Tuesday. The lineup starts at 4 p.m., just as many people are heading home from work.

Thursday, Dec. 3: A Museum's First December

The third night is the newest. The Walker Area Community Foundation asked the city to approve a White House on Fifth Museum & Gallery Holiday Event for Thursday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 11 p.m. at 1508 5th Ave. S. The request includes closing 5th Avenue South between 15th and 16th streets. At six hours, it's the longest of the three evenings.

The museum is only a few months old. The Daily Mountain Eagle covered its opening in May 2026. The house was built in the early 1900s by Jefferson "Jake" Phillips, who served as Jasper's mayor and as Walker County's sheriff. Martha Pennington's 1981 book "Walking Through Walker County" describes it as a Greek Revival home built in 1907. After sitting empty for years, it went through a long restoration that saved its original fireplaces, staircases, fixtures and floors.

Inside, artifacts donated or loaned by people across Walker County share space with a gallery of rotating work by local and regional artists. The Dec. 3 program hasn't been posted. Even so, this will be the first December the house has been open to the public as a museum.

Visitors who can't make the evening can come back during regular hours. Admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed from noon to 1 p.m., and on the third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In December, that Saturday is Dec. 19. The Bankhead House & Heritage Center, its companion museum about a mile away at 800 Seventh St. W., keeps the same hours. Its current exhibit features clay works and paintings by area physician Dr. Jerry Mosley.

The Weekend That Week Belongs to Sumiton and Cordova

Put Jasper's three nights next to the rest of Walker County's calendar and the pattern is clear. Jasper has the weeknights, and the Friday and Saturday events are in nearby towns.

Date Event Where
Mon., Nov. 30, 5–7 p.m. Festival of Lights & Christmas on Main Downtown Jasper
Mon., Nov. 30, 7 p.m. Handel's Messiah, Walker County Christian Chorus Grace Baptist Church, Sumiton
Tue., Dec. 1, 6 p.m. Walker County Christmas Parade Downtown Jasper
Thu., Dec. 3, 5–11 p.m. White House on Fifth Holiday Event 1508 5th Ave. S., Jasper
Fri., Dec. 4 Christmas on Main, with Sumiton's parade expected Downtown Sumiton
Sat., Dec. 5, noon–5 p.m. Cordova Christmas Market Cordova
Sat., Dec. 5, 6 p.m. Cordova Christmas Parade Cordova

Monday is the only real conflict. The Walker County Christian Chorus has staged the Messiah for more than 40 years, accompanied by members of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. It starts at 7 p.m. in Sumiton, the same time the tree lighting ends. You can see both only by leaving the tree lighting early.

Friday and Saturday are open for a second round. Sumiton's Christmas on Main is set for the first Friday in December. Cordova's market and parade fill Saturday afternoon and evening.

Dec. 12–13: The Trolley Gets Its Own Weekend

Downtown Jasper does get a December weekend, just not the first one. Jasper Main Street lists the Holly Jolly Trolley, described as a "Christmas Sing-Along with Santa," from 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, through 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13. The listed location is Downtown Jasper, 219 19th Street West.

Last year, trolley rides with singing elves were one part of the Christmas on Main program. This year, the Main Street calendar gives a trolley sing-along its own two days, separate from the tree lighting. The listing doesn't give ticket prices or a boarding point yet. The contacts on the page are (205) 878-4567 and [email protected].

Taken together, downtown Jasper's holiday calendar has grown from a single parade night into three weeknights in the first week of December plus a weekend of trolley rides two weeks later.

Planning Around a Weeknight Christmas

A few specifics for that week:

  1. Watch the weather the weekend before. The 2025 Christmas on Main was postponed a full week because of weather. Check Jasper Main Street's event page before heading downtown on Nov. 30.
  2. Give Tuesday afternoon to the parade. Santa's hours at the Civic Center and the 4 p.m. lineup at T.R. Simmons School mean the area around 19th Street gets busy well before 6 p.m.
  3. Thursday is the late night. The White House on Fifth event runs until 11 p.m., later than any other downtown event that week. 5th Avenue South will be closed between 15th and 16th streets.
  4. Thanksgiving guests may miss all of it. Holiday visitors who head home Sunday, Nov. 29, will leave the night before the tree lighting. Visitors staying into December can tour the White House on Fifth or the Bankhead House on Tuesday through Friday afternoons, with free admission at both.

This year's calendar has Christmas Eve on a Thursday and Christmas Day on a Friday, so the end of the month brings a long weekend.
